Turquoise is an opaque, blue-to-green mineral valued as a gemstone for millennia. Turquoise is renowned for its robin's egg blue to greenish-blue hues and often has brown or black, spiderweb-like matrix veins from its host rock. Turquoise is sacred to Native American tribes in the southwestern US and is a ceremonial gem and a medium of exchange. They use it extensively in their jewelry.
Turquoise jewelry tells the story of the American southwest. Turquoise Jewelry artists use a variety of different stones to show the numerous colors in the Southwestern sky. Turquoise is the blue sky, sugalite, charoite, red coral and spiny oyster are the setting Southwestern sun, Lapis is the twilight, onyx is the dark night, and cultured opal is the stars in the clear Southwestern night sky. Animals are used extensively in Southwestern Turquoise Jewelry including coyotes, bears, horses and hummingbirds
