Persians extensively wore turquoise jewelry. They believed turquoise offered protection by changing color to warn of pending doom. The turquoise jewelry associated with Native Americans today began in the 1880s, when a trader convinced a Navajo craftsman to craft silver coins into turquoise jewelry. Prior to this time, the Native Americans had made solid turquoise beads, carvings, and inlaid mosaics.
